Fried Rice

Notes, Tips & Tricks

Nasi goreng is one of the most popular Indonesian food and has become a worldwide known name for an Asian rice dish. This is one of our 30 Indonesian Culinary Icons .

"Nasi" means rice and "goreng" means fried. In Indonesia Nasi goreng will be served as a main menu. So please don't be surprised, if you make a holiday in Indonesia and you come across a "Nasi Goreng" as part of a breakfast menu ;-) My husband used to laugh about it. Nasi goreng .... for breakfast??!! ha ha ha. What can I say?? Typical Indonesian. We eat mostly rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner :-).

Here in western countries is little bit different. And of course you can eat Nasi goreng depends on your mood & appetite ;-).

Important Note: I should warn you that dried shrimp paste smells quite awful especially for Europeans, but the taste in Nasi Goreng or other finished dishes (if required) is greatfully aromatic and essential to the authenticity of Indonesian cuisine. My suggestion, use it only little at first as I write in this recipe. It is less than in my Indonesian version. If preferred you can add shrimps or vegetables into your nasi goreng such as : beansprouts, peas or shredded carrots.
