Tempeh, Indonesia’s wonder food was likely first made by accident in an attempt to preserve soybeans, now it’s going global. In its homeland, this humble soy patty is a favourite choice for making tempeh dishes and snacks.
Tempeh is incredibly healthy and nutritious and therefore a popular vegetarian meat replacement.
Eggplants with Chilli Sauce
Here we have a very popular recipe among Indonesias vegetarian dishes. It originates from the Minangkabau ethnic group and now is commonly served across whole Indonesia, known as Padang’s food.
Eggplants, also kown as aubergines, contain an amount of vitamins and minerals and are also rich on antioxidants. Together with its exotic origin and the spicy flavour, this is a very interesting vegetarian dish for everyone who wants to taste something different.
Yellow Turmeric Rice
Indonesian Turmeric Rice originated from the era of Javanese Hindu kingdoms, means this dish has been around for hundreds of years. Even though the Hindu kingdom had long gone in Indonesia, the tradition of making turmeric rice continued until now as it becomes an inherent part of Indonesian culinary tradition. Nasi Kuning is usually served in celebration or communal feast as an expression of gratitude. According to Javanese philosophy, yellow colour has a meaning like gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity.

Curly Kale in Rich Coconut Sauce
I’ve known this vegetarian dish from my best friend as well as ex colleague when I was working on Batam Island many years ago. This is one of my favorite recipes 😉
In Javanese this dish is called “Podomoro” which literally means “people are coming” to enjoy this delicious vegetable dish 😉 In Indonesia this recipe is usually made from young Cassava Leaves, but unfortunatelly this kind of vegetable is not available in the West. As an alternative I use curly kale as substitute. The result is magnificently delicious.
Silken Tofu with Satay Sauce
Tofu is a common soy-based meat substitute for vegetarians that is high in protein. However, it surely has a lack of taste. This shortcomming we will change with this recipe 🙂
The satay sauce is based on Indonesian sweet soya sauce, known as Kecap Manis. You will be surprised what we can do with tofu.
Choy Sum & Beansprouts Stir-Fry
Here we have on of the many stir-fried vegetarian dishes, we have in Indonesia. A simply recipe for you who doesn’t have much time to cook or just simply overwhelme by complicated adventurous recipes instructions :-). This is one of Indonesian variants of stir fried dish with common ingredients: chilli, shallot and garlic with a touch of Kecap Manis, an authentic Indonesian sweet soy sauce.
What makes this recipe interesting for vegetarians, certainly is the amount of bean sprouts, that are known as nutritional powerhouses with several health-promoting effects. Beside that, it tastes delicious.
Spicy Fried Tempeh
I’ve learnt this recipe from my grandmother who loves to spend almost her life in the kitchen ;-). Compare to common recipes of Spiced Fried Tempeh, here it is little bit different. My grandmother always put sliced kaffir-lime leaves on it, as she said to obtain the best taste and aroma. And I assure you she was right!! ;-). You can easily adjust the amout of spiciness by the amout of chillies, you use.

Though it looks simple, not everybody is able to make tasty fried tempeh & tofu, especially those who have no experience with asian food. Like my colleague, who told me one day: Tofu is tasteless, like eating sponge!!! ha ha… I asked her, how she made it. She said “Just boiled!” OK I understood & just grin 😉
So if you are one amongs my colleagues, then you can try this recipe. You will find out, tempeh & tofu aren’t just a white sponges’. In contrary, Tempe and Tofu can be cooked in many varieties way like we Indonesian do.
Honest to say, Tempeh is one of Indonesia’s best delicacies in its simple authentic way but all became wrong in those over-done bastardized printed-book recipes!! The choice is yours and good luck 😉

And last but not least, an Indonesian dessert as number ten of my favourit vegetarians dishes. We should enjoy life! The ingredients are very easy to find, even in Western countries. And the making process is also quite simple and fast.
